Tonight, Michele Bachmann became the first presidential candidate to sign a pledge created by THE FAMiLY LEADER, an influential social-conservative group in Iowa. By signing the pledge Bachmann “vows” to “uphold the institution of marriage as only between one man and one woman” by committing herself to 14 specifics steps. The ninth step calls for the banning of “all forms” of pornography. The pledge also states that homosexuality is both a choice and a health risk. You can read all the details of the pledge here.
Religion is also a choice and hers is dangerous to society.
Ban pornography? Isn’t that against the 1st Amendment? Darn those pesky constitutional rights always getting in the way of fundie assholes sticking their noses in everyone else’s business!
Say, just for the sake of argument, that a fetus (prior to… 24 weeks which is when the vast majority of abortions take place, prior to 24 weeks) is a person. Legally. let’s say it has all the rights of a person. Presumably a pre-adult person so it can’t vote or hold office or anything like that, but you know it has the same rights as a under one year old baby say.
Now we know how pregnancy works, right? We know that up until a certain point (and certianly before 24 weeks) the fetus can not live outside the mother’s womb right? It just can’t happen. It’s growing, it’s developing. Actually before 24 weeks it can’t actually feel pain. It’s not wired up yet. Can’t happen. But still, let’s give it the rights of a already born child, just for this thought experiment.
Now we also know that no other legal person, with rights, actually has the right to use another person’s body against their will right? Not even to live. Not even if they are going to die a horrible, tragic, painful death if they don’t use another person’s body (even if it doesn’t kill their ‘host’). Most folks can live with one kidney but if I was dying, literally dying, I don’t have the right to force another human being into donating a kidney. Say I was going to die without a blood transplant, or a bone marrow transplant. I can’t pick a random person off the street (or even a relative for that matter) with the same blood type as me and FORCE! them to give me blood, not even to save my life. I certainly can’t do this for 9 full months (or even just 24 weeks), no way. I’d be the one going to jail.
So what do we do when our legally a person fetus is using someone’s body against their will? When they are doing it without the pregnant person’s consent? Do we send them to court? Do we put them in jail? Do we ask them why they’re leaching off the life of this unwilling, unconsenting person? Do we penalize them for that? We penalize everyone else.
I am anticipating a ‘well we don’t KILL! someone who steals a kidney/liver/lung/blood from an unconsenting person’. And yes you are correct in that assessment. In the US at least. But for the purposes of this analogy, I want to point out there is a difference between killing someone and letting them die, legally speaking. There’s a difference between someone bleeding out because they can’t get a blood transplant and putting a gun to their head and pulling the trigger. And remember, legally our person-fetus has no leg to stand on. They have no right to use another person’s body against their will. They just don’t. You can’t get around that, not with the laws we have in place right now (in the US). If you give them that right than why aren’t you giving rights to the people who need kidney transplants to force other people to just give up a kidney. Or blood. Or bone marrow, or what have you. Why aren’t you telling someone they have a right to take my blood by force and without my consent for (at the very least) 9 months? That would make sense right? That would be logical.
Or wait… is a fetus special? Why? Because it hasn’t been born yet? Because it needs our protection. Because it can’t live without the aid of another human being. What about the person bleeding out up there? They can’t live without another human being. Is it the pre-born thing? Why are we giving more rights to the pre-born fetus? What is it about that status that makes them so special? Honestly. I want a real answer here. Why does a pre born fetus have right that trump the pregnant person (not to mention people needing another kidney, or a lung, or blood, or bone marrow or a million other things you can get without killing a person but aren’t allowed to take without consent)… seriously, why?
I would now like to remind everyone that this was just a hypothetical. Fetuses are still not people, they are not babies, they are not children. Are they alive? Sure but so is my kidney. It has living cells. So is the pregnant person for that matter and the pregnant person can think and feel pain and make conscious decisions and… you know choose things.
Sindy Clock (pictured) thinks that I should be raped. Raylene Ingmire, a schoolteacher from Tulsa, thinks I should be murdered. Paul Altum and Michael Perri think I should be killed. Casey M Jones and Bob O’Connell think I should be shot and Joe Martinez offered to do it with a twelve-gauge.
Everyday it looks more and more like America has our very own Taliban.
The more information out there on those who promote murder and hatred, the better.
People are saying it’s “unethical” to link to these people’s profiles and give their names. But what people forget is ALL of these were posted PUBLICLY and none of the information given is information that was not posted PUBLICLY.
What scares me is that there are people that I know who quite probably feel the same way. I don’t know for sure, but I don’t really want to find out either.
But Cersei is a slut. I’m not trying to spoil the books so I won’t name names, but she has sex with a pretty good number of people. 3 that I can think of off the top of my head, not counting Jamie. So I think that qualifies her as a greedy, manipulative, slut.
A woman slept with 4 people. My, oh my! Well I guess most people are greedy sluts too since the average number of (reported) sexual partners people have in their lifetime is between 7-13. There’s a good chance you’ll meet this apparent “requirement” for slut in your lifetime, isn’t that dandy? You big slut, good for you!
If you think “slut” is a legit empirical measure instead of some term used to target and police women’s sexual autonomy (woohoo, like you’re doing now to a fictional character, aren’t you awesome), then you are completely obviously to reality.
Yes, I am aware that people are clearly going to have multiple partners in their lifetime, I’m not a little virgin Catholic school girl. If you’re having sex with four people in an extremely short time period I think that makes you a slut. She wasn’t in a relationship with any of these people, aside from Jamie kinda-sorta, she was just doing it to get what she wanted. And to get laid.
And I really don’t understand why it matters to you if I call a fictional character a slut and why you’re speaking as if I’m an idiot, or that I think I’m cool, for doing so.
Is using “virgin” in a derogatory sense, along with some not-so-subtle ageism really a necessary response on being called out on your problematic attitude? Clue: it’s isn’t.
The way in which we treat fictional characters matters because they do not exist in a vacuum. They are part of our media culture, where fiction, even set in long-gone places or distant planets still reflects our reality. So when you call a woman a slut for sleeping with X people for Y reasons, it’s a pretty safe bet to say you hold these attitudes toward real actual living women (and it’s probably also safe to say you wouldn’t direct this vitrol at men who act in the same manner), and that is not okay.
Who someone has consensual sex with, no matter why, when, and how many times or how many different people is none of your business, and you do not have the right to shame them for their choice. Throwing around terms like “slut” to label women (including fictional ones) with whose choices you don’t agree with or approve of feeds into a culture that does this on a grand scale, that polices the autonomy women have, that shames them, tries to take away their rights, and supports a culture where female sexuality is governed by men. Where women’s sexual freedom has to please a male demand and gaze, where women’s ability to choose to have sex, or to choose not to have sex is targeted. It supports attitudes of “sluts” being unworthy of protection, respect or justice when they are victimised (because they were “asking for it”). Setting up a dichotomy of “sluts” vs. “non-sluts” is dangerous and backwards, and regardless of whether you believe it, it effects the choices you are able to make in the world you live in.
Also, I didn’t imply you were an idiot or that you think you’re cool. I imagine you think saying these kinds of things are perfectly okay, that you haven’t considered their impact, or that you simply don’t care that they’re problematic.
1. Hell fucking yes, to everything justjasper has said. 2. It is no one’s place to label another person as a slut or to criticise the consensual sex life of anyone else. 3. This meganwaslike uses the word slut as if being a “slut” is a bad thing.. hahahah. Genuinely find that hilarious.
Only 4? Christ, I’ve had sex with at least twenty people I can think of off of the top of my head. Good lord what does that make me? Oh. I know. Honest about my sexuality. That’s right…
"She wasn’t in a relationship with any of these people, aside from Jamie kinda-sorta, she was just doing it to get what she wanted. And to get laid."
And what is the problem with that? I wasn’t dating many of these people because we had a very strong physical attraction to one another, but were not emotionally compatible with one another. We were responsible enough to NOT get into a relationship based on our sex drive. And yeah, we wanted to fuck.
Just because YOU believe that someone needs to be in a committed monogamous relationship in order to share a sexual experience, doesn’t mean that others have to feel that way. NOR does it mean that people who engage in sexual intercourse outside of sex within a committed monogamous relationship are BAD people. They are honest with themselves. They don’t sexually oppress themselves because what is the benefit of denying yourself a pleasurable consensual experience with someone who also wishes to share a pleasurable consensual experience with you?
And don’t you fucking say anything about women needing to keep their legs closed or I will lose my shit on you about how much BULLSHIT that is and how you really need to reanalyze the double standard between genders for sexual “promiscuity”. For real.
People are absolute fools to fall for the “omg teh babbys!” bullshit, because the “pro life” movement has never been about saving anyone’s life—it’s about control, hatred, and fear, pure and simple. So all these naive Tumblr bloggers who rhapsodize about ~babbys~ and who slut-shame and think they’re on the noble side are nothing but pawns fighting against their own rights. Congratulations.
I’ll also throw in here that the “pro life” movement is also terrified of white people becoming the minority in the US—which is exactly what is set to happen in a few decades. Oh, they go through the motions of targeting POC with their bullshit, but underlying all their dogma is the idea that white women need to keep breeding so the brown people don’t take over. Oh, and the whole “hdu decide not to be pregnant, you OWE some infertile couple somewhere!” is incredibly racialized too—because all these babies these people are “desperate” for are white. Little non-white children are waiting for adoption in DROVES. If these couples want a kid so bad, there are thousands who already exist who need families.
Once again, the “pro life” movement is NOT about saving babies or anyone’s life, really—it’s about control and about preserving a bullshit image of America that never existed.
“Now, when people think “chivalry,” they think of men opening doors for women, throwing their jackets over puddles, and paying for dinners. All admittedly nice things, save the jacket throwing - that just seems nuts, given the price of outerwear these days. But this is how they get you. Doing things like opening doors for people is polite. I would hope one would do as much for anyone if they got to the door first. Chivalry is something completely different.
There’s a difference between being chivalrous and being nice or polite. Opening a door for someone because you got to the door first is both nice and polite; making a huge production of opening a door for a woman in the hopes that she’ll see what a chivalrous dude you are and fuck you (and then getting all pissy when she doesn’t respond how you want her to) is not polite or nice. And that’s the thing with chivalry: It always demands something in return. If you’re being nice to me because you like me and you’re the kind of person who is nice to people you like, then that’s great. If you’re being nice to me because you’re hoping to get something out of it, or if you think you’re entitled to sex or a relationship with me because you were nice and “chivalrous,” you can go fuck yourself. See how that works?”—Jessica Valenti, He’s a Stud, She’s a Slut, and 49 Other Double Standards Every Woman Should Know (via angrywomenoftumblr)
“She showed up as Jo, rehearsed as Jo… if you said ‘Gaga,’ she wouldn’t respond. After rehearsals, she comes over, she says to me, ‘It’s nice to meet you,’ and I say to her, ‘I know your friend Gaga,’ and she says, ‘That Gaga, what a bitch!’”—MTV VMA President (via fuckyeahladygaga)
Fox News’ Greg Gutfeld, discussing Bachmann’s proposal to drill in the Everglades.
The Everglades are a liberal conspiracy.
BUT THERE ISN’T OIL EVERYWHERE YOU FUCKING MORON! IT’S NOT LIKE YOU JUST DIG A HOLE AND, “OH LOOKY THERE!, FUCKIN’ OIL! I NEVER KNEW!”
I grew up in an oil-producing area. I had friends whose parents were geologists and oilfield workers that spent long fucking hours looking for oil deposits to drill. Saying, “Oh, we will drill the Everglades/Alaska/Gulf of Mexico and get lots of oil and then everything will be cheap and consumer friendly!” understands nothing about the oil business, international energy futures/speculation, and basic supply-and-demand economics.
Not only do you espouse a dangerously simplified version of capitalistic economic thinking, you fucking fail it and basic resource conservation! You are a horrible person and your “just drill there!” idiocy shows why you should not be a part of the public conversation on energy policy. Go away, the grown-ups need to talk.
The evidence is overwhelming… that Dick Cheney is not just a political figure with controversial views, but is an actual criminal, that he was centrally involved in a whole variety not just of war crimes in Iraq, but of domestic crimes, as well, including the authorization of warrantless eavesdropping on American citizens in violation of FISA, which says that you go to jail for five years for each offense, as well as the authorization and implementation of a worldwide torture regime that, according to General Barry McCaffrey, resulted in the murder — his word — of dozens of detainees, far beyond just the three or four cases of waterboarding that media figures typically ask Cheney about.
And as a result, Dick Cheney goes around the country profiting off of this, you know, sleazy, sensationalistic, self-serving book, basically profiting from his crimes, and at the same time normalizing the idea that these kind of policies, though maybe in the view of some wrongheaded, are perfectly legitimate political choices to make. And I think that’s the really damaging legacy from all of this.
“People say, ‘I’m going to sleep now,’ as if it were nothing. But it’s really a bizarre activity. ‘For the next several hours, while the sun is gone, I’m going to become unconscious, temporarily losing command over everything I know and understand. When the sun returns, I will resume my life. If you didn’t know what sleep was, and you had only seen it in a science fiction movie, you would think it was weird and tell all your friends about the movie you’d seen. They had these people, you know? And they would walk around all day and be OK? And then, once a day, usually after dark, they would lie down on these special platforms and become unconscious. They would stop functioning almost completely, except deep in their minds they would have adventures and experiences that were completely impossible in real life. As they lay there, completely vulnerable to their enemies, their only movements were to occasionally shift from one position to another; or, if one of the ‘mind adventures’ got too real, they would sit up and scream and be glad they weren’t unconscious anymore. Then they would drink a lot of coffee. So, next time you see someone sleeping, make believe you’re in a science fiction movie. And whisper, ‘The creature is regenerating itself.”—
It breaks my heart to hear about women giving up their babies when there are thousands of women who would give their lives to have a child of their own. At the moment of conception, there IS a living child inside there. I cannot believe our great…
WAT IS THIS I DON'T EVEN..?! I have so much I can say but I'm so frustrated with this troll that I can't form words correctly so, tumblr; Feel free to discuss.
"I’m a girl with IQ just under 200, am super successful in my career, blonde, 5’8" and good looking (mid 30s). I wish nothing other than that I was born dumb. Almost every man is threatened by you and they struggle with the fact that they can’t ‘provide’ for you. When you earn more than 5-10times what they earn, they either end up using you or dumping you.
Smart girls are tortured, frustrated and are always getting hurt. I don’t know one single smart girl who wont tell you the same thing. If you’re a good looking, high achieving female, it’s always the same and I’ve worked in countries all around the world (the only place I’ve found it differently are places like India with arranged marriages).
Dumb girls get looked after, have simple lives and are content to be so. They are generally happy and I envy them greatly. It’s easy to be dumb. There are such limited expectations upon yourself.
My advice is the exact opposite of this article. Let the little girl be praised for her looks and her sweetness.
Being dumb is much better than having to play dumb. It does no good for a girl to be too smart.”
EDIT: Some replies people said to the “girl”
"Me thinks you have been dating the wrong kind of men. In other words, you may be smart and well educated, but you lack the emotional intelligence and/or self-esteem required to separate the wheat from the chaff, when selecting a partner.
"Clearly, for all your academic intelligence, you seem to lack what a lot of high achieving, high IQ people lack, social/emotional intelligence and a sense of humour. Instead of feeling superior, recognise that weakness and try and develop it."
"For someone who claims to be so smart, attractive and earn so much money you really have poor social skills and a complete lack of social awareness. Your lack of humility is astounding. It is so much easier to blame the rest of the world and not actually look at your behaviour as being the problem.
Let me tell you something you already know, what you are experiencing is not a gender issue. You sound obnoxious, bitter and self absorbed and you would receive the exact same reaction if you were a male. I know plenty of men and women who behave the same way you appear to and most people dislike them. The problem is not with others, it is with you!
I therefore have to question your IQ of 200 point IQ because anyone who scores well on these tests firslty know they mean very little and in any case should be socially aware enough to not go carrying it around like a badge of honour.”
"If Too Smart is for real then I’ll eat my hat (and scarf). Despite the perfect spelling and grammar of ‘her’ post, an IQ of "just under 200" is genius level. If a genius is truly sitting at her computer and joining The Age commentariat, then I despair at such precious time being wasted (of course, everyone needs a break, but I seriously doubt that a genius couldn’t think of a better way to indulge in downtime). A genius also wouldn’t disown their own genetic advantage, because they would have been able to create strategies to mitigate its downsides.
"Oh, please. I think the tone of your bitter diatribe and the language you use against women whom you deem below you intellectually tells me why men feel "threatened" by you. My sister is absolutely gorgeous and very intelligent, talented and successful and, yes, some people (both men and women) feel threatened by her, but - as others have suggested - she’s got the smarts to pick up on it and either wins them over with her personality or weeds them out and doesn’t worry about them. And do you think that good-looking, highly successful men have any fewer problems than you do? Let me tell you that I’ve known enough of them to see how they’re targeted and used by shallow, narcissistic, lazy women who want a good "catch" (and, yeah, they love being likened to a fish by absolutely everyone). And unfortunately, those sorts of women can be very witty, worldly and intelligent until they get their hooks in and no longer have to make an effort."
“Your stated IQ seems to be around 6 standard deviations above the mean, with would place you above (roughly) 99.9999998% of the population. No doubt you already knew that.”
… She may be surprised and unsure at first because few ask her about her mind, but be patient and stick with it. Ask her what she’s reading. What does she like and dislike, and why? There are no wrong answers. You’re just generating an intelligent conversation that respects her brain.
Awesome article. But wait! A wild ignorant-fuck appears!
What’s wrong with wanting to be hot rather than smart? Not everyone can be intelligent, and both beauty and intelligence are natural, requiring no work.
So I just read about that time Rick Perry completely disregarded foreign policy and murdered a Mexican Citizen.
Yeah because, we want a president that disregarded respect for foreign policies, ignored Mexico’s ambassador when he called to say he disapproved of the execution and made decisions about capital punishment toward non-US Citizens that would encourage foreign governments to violate the rights of American Citizens abroad because our president had not followed the law and given the same respect to a foreigner as we would expect to have for ourselves.
CARO — The lawyer for former Caro High School softball coach Mickey T. Gotwalt — sentenced to prison Thursday for sex crimes against a 14-year-old female student — told a judge that the victim will “have forgotten all about this at some point.”
“I mean (Gotwalt) didn’t kill this girl,” Thomas A. Warda, the Flint lawyer representing the former coach, told Tuscola County Circuit Judge Patrick R. Joslyn, according to a transcript of Gotwalt’s sentencing obtained by The Saginaw News.
“I mean this isn’t — I don’t think she’s gonna have psychological injury the rest of her life,” Warda said. “I mean he’ll be in prison, but, you know, she’ll have forgotten all about this at some point.”
Thomas A. Warda: Mother. Fucker.
Seriously, read through the defense attorney’s comments throughout the article. Unreal.
I love his point that men don’t just start becoming pedophiles at age 51. That’s true, sir. I’d be looking into this guy’s background very carefully, not blaming the girl, blaming meds, or blaming anything else.
But we’re all supposed to feel okay about this because the victim will just forget all about it someday. Yeah, that’s how it works. Whew! Words cannot describe how much I’d like to scratch this man’s eyes out right now.
I am working on a Sociological / Psychological / Awareness & Education of controversial topics kind of “game”, if you will, if anyone is interested in helping me out. My sister and I were rummaging though our old board games and we found this one old 60’s game that had a bunch of cards with questions on it that you’re supposed to ask a person in the group and discuss the feelings on. Well, we brain stormed and came up with the following categories thus far for cards to draw:
Feelings/Reactions & Beliefs/Opinions (Light Hearted Personal Questions)
Feelings/Reactions & Beliefs/Opinions (Deep Understanding Personal Questions)
Positive Affirmations. Draw another card.
Did You Know? (Fact’s About Any of the Information Included in This Practice) Draw Another Card.
Stance on Controversial Topics (“How do you feel about…”) Includes things like Abortion, Military, Capital Punishment, Poverty, Eating Disorders, Abuse, etc. and a brief explanation of the topic for group discussion)
Describe Your Feelings or Opinions Toward This Quote / Photograph
Blank Cards (Create Your Own Questions)
If you’re interested in knowing more or helping please let me know!
EDIT: I am also considering making an entire blog dedicated to this… Thoughts? I would definitely need some help from others to keep the material unbiased and educational.
